The North Rim Grand Canyon road trip

One of the best things about staying in hostels is meeting new people and staying in the Hostel Cat a lot of people drive so that they can go to all the National Parks as Vegas is usually just a stopover. So after a fun Hostel Cat night out on Freemont street and chatting to new people arriving in the hostel about my day and how I ended up at Alesso instead of the grand canyon, a guy called Thurston from London mentions he is going to the grand canyon tomorrow and offers me to join him if I’m up early enough the next day. Definitely keen and was really disappointed not to have gone, so make that part of my plan.

However forgetting to set any alarm, it’s lucky that when Thurston knocks on my door at 8.30am I’m actually awake and able to get ready in about 20minutes as he is about to leave. So on the road by just after 9am, it is going to be a late night back but excited to be doing a road trip as much more fun than doing a booked tour, plus you have the flexibility to do what you want to do and can have the comfort of a nice car (which he has!).

After one of his friends recommending him to go to the North Rim Grand Canyon, that is a 4.5hour drive each way and more on the way to Utah and the other national parks like Zion and Bryce that are also on my list. So the drive there is pretty nice and some interesting parts along the way driving through rocks, mountains and canyons. It is quite bizarre along the way to see random towns and casinos in the middle of the desert, as literally nothing else is about. We need to stop off at the first town, since I’m not very prepared for the journey and have no food or drink, although Thurston luckily is and did bring snacks.
