So eventually after 2 weeks of living in Cairns, time has come already to leave for Perth and close the East Coast road trip chapter. with Cairn’s being the longest stint in anyone place, it will be sad to leave but have done some amazing things here from snorkelling and diving the Great Barrier reef, White water rafting on the Tully river, Skydiving over Cairns, swimming in the waterfalls of tablelands, exploring the rainforest of cape tribulation, zip wiring and night walking through the rainforest. Seen every day sitting in the big trees the amazing bats of Cairn’s, which like clockwork at sunset all come out and fly over Gilligan’s hundreds of them flying about. Had sunshine and had total monsoons! Plus some fun and amazing partying nights in Gilligan’s – meeting super cool new people and reunions with guys all the way from Byron Bay, Surfers and Agnes Water!
So the final night at Gilligan’s is Wednesday’s Jelly Wrestling competition, which is actually quite amusing. We start off the night having pre drinks in Arron, Karl and Joe’s room with Luke and a few other guys there. My dorm mate Seb joins a bit later, giving us a bit a scare as we all thought he was security coming in as you are not meant to drink in the rooms after a certain time, but all being pretty skint on backpacker budgets it saves a lot of money during the night as otherwise you start far too early.
About 10ish we all head down, me for the final time, which is probably a good thing as 2 weeks in Cairns partying is not the best for your fitness (well apart from all the dancing) haha! The jelly wrestling comp is all set up and the girls are in competitive mode tonight, always amusing to watch as they get quite catty and aggressive eager to pull the ankle strap off. With one Aussie girl dominating it most of the comp, it’s a surprise when in the final she looses out to a much bigger girl who is much slower, but just has the strength.
Being a Wednesday night it is only open until 2am, so a handful of us (Luke, Karl, Seb and a London girl called Hannah) head for the final afterparty in my dorm room sitting out on the balcony listening to all the drunken people on the street directly below and laughing at how ridiculous some of them are. See and Karl are quite wasted and are not saying too much, just getting a bit paranoid as Luke and I keep laughing at how bad they are. At that point a random guy, also called Luke, pops out onto the balcony who apparently is in my dorm but not met him so that is a bit freaky and he chats away and asks to use a phone for messenger which I offer, however now I keep getting all his message alerts and not sure how to turn them off haha. Aware that I can’t be super super late as have the snorkelling in the morning, we decide to call it a night especially Karl and Seb who need their bed. So all amusing and lot’s of good times, will be sad to leave the guys behind, but always onwards to more partying and new people and new places.
