After a lovely couple of days at Neolie’s it’s back to my backpacking ways in Byron. Arriving early Saturday at 8am I have to wait a few hours to check into YHA Cape Byron and it’s nice hostel – not too party but nice pool and rooms/showers decent.
Day 1 in Byron (Sat) mainly spent sussing out the area and hanging out with my mate Jose from Newcastle going to Miss Margarita which did super nice mecican food and an interesting spot to people watch. It’s not quite nice enough to sit on the beach as weather unsettled, so check out a few of the other hostels to compare to YHA and end up hanging out in Aquarius as it sells drink if u eat and has a ping pong table so play couple of games to hide from the rain storm, only just getting beaten both times. When the rain stops we head to Jose’s hostel Holiday Village as they are doing a bbq and BYO drink so grab a box of wine and stay there most of the night all having bit of a dance at the end. When we head out we end up in a few places trying them out going Woodies, Sticky Wicket and Northern Rail all not so bad.
Day 2 is a chilled day at the YHA pool, beach, booking up surfing and diving and checking out more about trips further up east building the itinery up. Jose is also heading up to surfers paradise, so meet him to say bye although sure will catch up at some point. Then as its Sunday head after some nice time on the beach to Beach Hotel for live music and DJ, as they enjoy their sunday sessions in Australia. It’s a really cool atmosphere and get chatting with some locals so ends up being bit of a group of us for few hours, listening to the tunes and more people watching as there are some funky older hippie dancers here really getting into the band. For the night had all the intentions to re meet with the group, but end up meeting some cool people at the hostel, one from Southend too lol so hang out there chatting drinking goon keeping it a cheaper night out.
Day 3 is surf day… first lesson at Black Dog which goes really well and it’s more fun than I expected. The teachers are really nice and a cool group too in total about 11 of us. We go to Clarks Beach which is a popular spot for surfers it seems. First half is on a big foam board and do ok, but it’s hard to control so after our break they switch me to a performance board that is so much better and manage 3 times to stand up right to the beach. The next thing to learn is paddling and finding the right break, so lesson 2 is booked in.
Rest of the day is beach just watching the waves, surf patrol and listening to live music thats playing on the grass area where people just hang out doing bbq’s. As it’s bit overcast I decide to take out one of the YHA free bikes to ride up the coast a bit. A nice experience getting to see the full bay although the bike could do with some improvement as break doesn’t work well, no bell and no steam to go up hills so considering Byron hasva big hill for the lighthouse the bike isn’t going to work. So by time I get back it’s sunset and trying to keep myself for australia day just end up hanging out with the new dorm guys both from Brisbane having few drinks at the hostel and then at the beach hotel, which s pretty quiet along with rest of town compared to sat and sunday that was heaving everywhere.
