Lake Wahinpau – The Kiwi Fancy Dress Party

Arriving at Lake Mahinapua about 5, it’s not a great night weather wise as is pouring with rain and so stuck indoors, which is a shame as the hostel Lake Mahinapua Hotel would be great in nice weather as has a nice bushwalk to the lake and glowworm caves, plus lots of outside seating areas. We are staying in cute cabins, although a bit small with Ida, Harry, Alex, Gin and Billy and also cold, especially as we are all a bit wet. The owners of the bar seem quite crazy and just keen for us all to have fun, giving out shots and extending the happy hour so that everyone can have drinks before the big fancy dress party.

The hostel are cooking a big Sunday roast for us all and so while we are waiting for that, a few of us do the Jade Stone carving as they do it here and it is quite cheap at $20, which includes the stone. The guy running it is nice and shows us how to use the machine to shape the stone have picked. With a big choice of stones to choose from, light to darker greens, I go with a lighter multi-coloured green and decide to do the shape of a heart that is quite easy to do.  The guy draws the shape and then it’s simply rolling the edge against the machine, that you can even touch with your hand so it isn’t dangerous. For the middle section to cut out you use the edge of the roller to cut into it and then use sandpaper to smooth it down.  Pleased with the finished heart, before giving as a gift you need to wear it to put your spirit in it and as I want to give it to sis  I keep wearing it for the night.

By the time finish the necklace, it’s time for the roast which is pork with cracking and tastes so good as not had pork for ages and loving the potatoes. It’s a big portion and can get more if want, so seems good value as costs $50 (£25) for the room, the all can eat roast dinner and breakfast, which is pancakes and bacon.  Straight after dinner we all need to get ready for the party and the guys need to make their outfits using all sorts from black bin bags, card, feathers, toilet rolls and facepaints. Ida goes as a glowworm covering herself in glowsticks, Alex goes as a colourful bird, Harry and Chris in onesies being a Unicorn and a flamingo, Billy goes as Penguin, Mads as an elephant, Janich as a owl, Essie as a monkey and Charlotte as a panda. It is good fun in the room all getting ready and everyone is up for a big fun night.  As mine is a fleecy bear pyjama set it is really easy to get ready for, with just the addition of covering my face with brown eye shadow.

The rest of the bus also makes a good effort, with some good creative outfits like a spider with legs made from stuffed tights, 3 blind mice, yellow chicken, sheep roadkill and a box jellyfish. It’s super hot in the bar, especially in the fleecy outfit so have to spend most of the night outside just chatting to the group and all having good fun. There is some limbo going on, dance off’s and lots of shots so ends being bit of a drunken night finishing up around 2-3am.  Back in the room at the end, everyone starts doing a light show with Ida’s glow sticks as looks very cool in the dark being spun around with all the colours of the glowsticks.  Another good night had by team Kiwi.
