Final weekend in Cairns – Cancelled Skydives, A Vietnam Reunion and Pool Partying

So after having the sky dive cancelled already once on Thursday, the rescheduled one is at 7am Saturday so another early start and never ideal after a Friday night at Gillingans. But looking at the weather I’m not expecting great things, as looks very wet so it’s no surprise as soon as I get to the bus the guy informs us that it is again cancelled, which is frustrating as it is a waste of a day. It does mean can catch-up on sleep again and head up to reschedule it for Sunday, a last chance option and luckily there is a 10am bus option meaning if it is cancelled again then at least I’m not up too early and can enjoy my Saturday night more. So the rest of the day is just spent visiting a few of the million of travel agents about in Cairns getting a few quotes for New Zealand and chilling around town. I bump into Luke, who was in my first dorm room and after the travel shop visits end up hanging out with him mostly around the pool bar area, with a group of Irish and Essex lads he knows from Sydney who have just arrived and are all good fun called Arron, Karl, Joe, Charlie and Josh. So spending most of the day around the pool area, out of the little sun there is as it is way too humid to be out in it and are forced to stay in the shade. That is why I much prefer the climate in Perth, as you can actually enjoy the sunshine and warm weather rather than spend it in hiding haha. After staying around there for a few hours, the boys leave to grab some drinks to have pre-drinks in the room, but leaving it too late and missing the cut off you’re allowed to bring drink in we all have to have the drinks at Luke’s hostel across the road sitting out on his steps. As Saturday night is aways party night at Gillies, we head there not too late about 10.30pm before the bouncers get too strict on entry, however as Joe comes a bit after us he doesn’t end up getting in anyway. The night is pretty fun and catch-up with Rrory too, having a good dance in the club and chat to people out in the live music area. I end up bumping into 1770 Nayf and it’s his birthday and not sure I have ever seen anyone quite so drunk as him, with his birthday bandana on and sore ribs so walking funny I almost mistook him for one of the drunken locals that hang about haha, but luckily I stop and manage to help him get back to his hostel and enter the code needed, which is the same hostel Luke is staying in.

So Sunday after a decent enough lie in, I head down for the skydive bus but as expected it is cancelled as get a message from the skydive people. As I am up and ready, I ring up to see if there any spaces on the Cairns skydive instead and get myself on a standby one for the afternoon 2.30pm. The good thing with it being cancelled is means I can catch-up up with Vietnam James, who I also saw In Sydney for the Ivy night out. He arrives just for a few hours on his way to Innis Falls to do farmwork, so meet by the marina grabbing a smoothie. He has his life with him, with a pretty big backpack so don’t venture to much around Cairns, but do show him the lagoon and esplanade area where we end up in the Global Packbacker pub trying t cool down in the air con. I bump into Chloe and Phil on the way and they start chatting about tours etc I have done, as haven’t booked anything yet with poor James standing there in a ball of sweat haha so have to cut it short, although it’s good practice for getting used to the heat for the farmwork and humping bananas.

Once James heads off for his 1.45pm greyhound bus, I try and find where the Cairn’s skydive office is and need to go if it happens, but it pretty difficult to find and confusing as they have 2 offices and everyone sends me to the wrong one. Once I realise it’s up by the mall and not McDonalds I run into the mall for a few things, before heading back to Gilligan’s for the pool party and big McGREGOR fight where everyone is totally pumped for him to win and the bar is full. The Irish lads Arron and Karl are super hyped for it too and with the big build up, it’s pretty gutting to everyone when he looses in just 2 rounds as got too tired out. Not the sort of fight I’ve seen before and compared to boxing it is pretty bloody and violent. After the fight everyone stays down the pool area rest of the day, which is the usual Gilligans pool party day so cheap $5 coronas and a really good house DJ. We all stay there for the cheap beef curry backpacker deal and then once the bats all start coming out at their usual 7pm slot, head back to change and continue the night as it is also Rrory’s last night, which will be an end of a good partying buddy all the way from Byron. We hang out with the Canadian guy Rrory is friends with – Coltain and there are few other people who are on a scuba diving course and staying here so sitting outside there is a nice group of us.

Sunday night is the wet t-shirt competition which really isn’t very classy, but amusing to see how competitive they get and what they will do to win. We end up hanging out with couple more Irish guys, one called Shane who is pretty funny cracking the jokes all the time. By the time it shuts it’s about 2am and head with the Irish guys to get some food and do a late night tour of the marina and lagoon area as not seen it yet and thought early in the morning would be a perfect time (or not!) especially when you have to be up at 7am for a coach to Cape Tribulation!.
