Early start to head on the trip to Margaret river, picking up Tamara’s friend on the way Abbie (who bizarrely I find out later has a best mate who is the brother of Scott McKay from Cambodia and travelled with me and George).
Taking about 2 hours from Perth the roads are so empty so it’s a nice drive and on route we stop off in Dunsborough to look at some boutique shops and I manage to pick up a SIM card using Telstar as they are meant to have best coverage.
So as Margaret River is famous for its wines we have our xmas eve lunch at a gorgeos winery called Knee Deep which has an asian theme to it. There is the option for the chef to choose your meals, but the whole table has to do it and as I don’t like surprises with my food so much we choose ourselves. Picking beef and venison sausage, roasties and pak choi the food is super nice and actually quite reasonable too although its definitely no asia prices haha. We are able to do some wine tasting too and pick a nice sauvignon blance 2014 to have with lunch.
Back on the road to the lodge we do a quick beach stop at Meelup Beach , which has amazing blue waters (as I’m to find there are no bad beaches in WA) . After there head to Yallingup another gorgeous reef and blue waters contrasting against the white sand.
When we arrive at our home for next couple days in Riverglen chalets it’s super cute and decent size. We dump the bags and food for Xmas day and head into town. It’s about 15min walk and we have a drink first at Settlers Tavern which is pretty dead and so decide can’t have more than one beer there as it’s way to quiet haha. Next bar is Swings which is part of the winery swings and roundabouts and is hundred times better and playing some good tunes. The food here is good too sharing a pizza and a chocolate mouse, which doesn’t get points for the presentation but tasty. Not of a trendy crowd are here – some bit alternative looking and getting very into the dancing. Everywhere needs to shuts early Xmas eve in oz so it’s not too late a night – handy to be fresh for Xmas day.
To celebrate Xmas day we head to Grace Town with a picnic of prosecco, cheese and crackers! We get a nice spot and enjoy the sun for a few hours before the wind picks up too much and we have a mini cyclone on our matt and umbrella turns inside out so decide to explore some of the other amazing beaches. We check out Prevalley and get some pics before heading back to the lodge to make a start on our Xmas feast, which is hard to do with the oven we have and first attempt of serving up the chicken was still raw in the middle! It’s a nice chilled Xmas night with some sparkling red and chats as have Another early start to head to our next road trip location which T found out is actually another 4 hours drive away. Australia is just such a huge place!
