After a hectic few days it’s nice to get a lie in as have the room for few days, so spend the morning chilling in the room as we still have it to ourselves. The plan today is to go luging up the gondola. Was considering not doing it, as already have done it once with Tahu, but Harry convinces me by saying it will be totally different experience with the kiwi bus team, which he is very right with!
So hanging about in the Nomads lounge, which is quite cosy with leather sofas and a fire, we wait for everyone so we can head to the luge. The one problem with so many people, however is organising everyone and despite saying to leave at 1pm it isnt until at least 2pm we manage to get out.
There is a big group with Harry, Alex, Ida, Essie, Charlotte x2, Billy, Chris, Mads, Jannic, Christoph and Michelle, so we all get the deal of the day of Gondala plus 6 luge rides for $60 so can race each other. I head up with Alex who cracks me up as he is so scared going up and can’t look anywhere but at his phone. So I try and get him to look by taking a picture or by pointing out the bungy jumpers, which he can’t do at all!
Eventually getting to the top we do 4 in a row and as expected the boys race on ahead trying to be the fastest. They try and wait for us all to be together, but get told to move down and start. So racing with Ida and the two Charlotte’s it’s great fun and going a bit too fast a couple of times I nearly topple and get stuck on the corner edge as went to high.
As Alex has a Go Pro, for the last couple I try and get infront of him so can be in the video. The first time he over takes me and second I’m too far ahead and then slow down way too much so he overtakes me again as not able to rebuild up the speed enough as stopped at a flat bit stupidly. I’m definitely no Lewis or Schumacher haha.
So to break them up we do head to the bar for a drink, which is a really nice bar overlooking the lake so amazing view and it’s cool to see the difference in the tree colours from last time as all red and gold. The bar is a bit pricy (not for backpackers) because of the view, but worth it as it’s very cosy with a nice fire and even doing mulled wine. We stay there for a bit taking up most of the bar as so many of us watching the gondolas go by. By the time we have all finished it’s nearly 5 and so taken up most of the afternoon.
Walking back down we all laughing at Alex with the way walking, as all day walking like he has had an accident especially down the luge hills after doing the big walk in Wanaka. I’m thinking I’m pleased I missed it if it was that hard on the legs… after Mount Doom climb not sure I can do steep again. It’s so beautiful going down with the red trees, lake and mountains. We pass a group of totally drunken locals, who are just sitting on the pavement and shouting at people I guess having their own Sunday session.
On the way back Ida and I stop at the icenter travel shop to book our jet boat tour, which we decide to do the one on lake as longest time in the boat and does 2 rivers shotover and kawara. He also talks to me about Fiji and gives me a brochure to look at, as it’s only a week ago and nothing as yet is sorted.
Rest of the night is spent chilling out with some nice food and a much quieter night, as we all have Milford Sounds early the next morning at 7am and all feeling a little delicate after Saturday night antics. Although it’s hard being Queenstown to not even go to one bar!
