Onto Westport the surfing town of south island via Lake Nelson

Not having to leave too early luckily the next day, everyone has a good sleep helped by us all also having an early night due to not having anything to do at the hostel in the evening with no bar really and too cold to go to the beach to drink as that is the only place allowed as again do room checks making it feel more like a school trip.  A good chance to catch-up on washing, blog and watch a bit of the Lord of the Rings with Amsterdam Frank who arrived as one day behind me.  Nice to catch-up again with him and keeping it chilled, as not allowed to do much else as the staff in the hostel really don’t seem keen on backpackers and were telling me that the contract with Kiwi bus runs out in July and won’t be renewing it. Frustrating as we have all paid to stay there, but not a nice vibe there at all.

So all looking forward to reaching our next stop of Westport, we again have a long drive stopping for lunch at LAKE NELSON where anyone brave enough jumps into the lake, which is absolutely freezing. Quite funny to see everyone’s face of shock and come out of the water red from where it is so cold. Us girls are all more sensible keeping warm, trying to stay away from the mossies. I decide to feed the ducks some of my left over bread, immediately getting them all flocking to me and looking like they are going to bite my ankles with one particulary greedy one snapping bread from my hands. Amongst the usual ducks there is one that looks very different and has all the colours of the rainbow and stands out from the rest, looking even slightly regal. Not sure what type of duck it is, but cute.

After leaving the lake, we have about 3 more hours in the coach arriving to Westport about 5ish and all really liking the BASILS HOSTEL as so homely feeling, especially as we get a room for 11 so our group is all together and in the room we have a fire, TV so a nice place to hang out having drinks as allowed to have our own drinks up to 9.30pm. The driver was planning a bonfire, but it starts raining so all the bus going head to the park across the road instead, as it has a picnic seating area a nice fountain garden area. It’s good opportunity to meet the rest of the bus who joined only at Nelson.

We then, before it gets too late head to a pub called BLACK AND WHITE, which is fairly busy with locals and the bus. It’s quite fun and the barman decides to give Me and Ida shots and there is limbo competition going on. All in a good mood we head back to the hostel to watch Leicester’s game vs Spurs to win the title, as it’s playing live.  Some stay up quite late, but get to sleep at a decent time as up early for surfing.
